Born :- 12 May 1820 in Florence, Italy.
(NOTE :- 12th may is being celebrated as International Nurses Day every year.)
Death :- 13 August 1910 in London, England.

Florence Nightingale was also known as the

  • lady with the lamp
  • Pioneer of Nursing
  • Father of Nursing
  • Modern father of Nursing
  • Mother of modern Nursing.

Florence Nightingale was a celebrated English social reformer, statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of nursing and public health. Nightingale gained prominence for her work during the Crimean War in 1854, where she and a team of nurses provided care for wounded soldiers.

International Nurses Day celebration – 12th May
1st International Nurses Day – 12th May 1965
2nd International Nurses Day- on 12th May 1974
After 1974 every year, 12th may is being celebrated as the International Nurses Day.

On 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale, WHO celebrated year 2020 as the ‘International year of Nurses and Midwives’.

Every year the theme of Nurses Day is given by – ICN (International Council for Nurses)

1st Nursing theory – The Environmental theory
Given by Florence Nightingale in 1859
Which includes 5 components :

  • Pure water
  • Proper light
  • Cleanliness
  • Fresh air
  • Proper drainage

Meta paradigm of Nursing – 4 i.e., Person, Health, Nursing and Environment.

First Nurse – Florence Nightingale.
First Psychiatric Nurse – Linda Richards.
First anaesthetic Nurse – Sister Mary Bernard.

History of Nursing
1854 – crimean war

1859
Florence Nightingale :-

  • wrote first book of Nursing – ‘Notes on Nursing’
  • given the first theory of Nursing – ‘Environmental theory’

1860 – World’s first Nursing school started by the name ‘Nightingale training school for Nurses’ at St. Thomas Hospital in England.

1871 – India’s first Nursing school started at ‘Government General Hospital’ in Madras (Tamil Nadu)

1899 – Establishment of ICN (International council for Nurses)
Headquarter – Geneva, Switzerland
Current President of ICN – Dr. Pamela Cipriano.

1908 – Establishment of TNAI (Trained Nurses Association of India)
Headquarter – New Delhi
Current President – Prof. Dr. Roy K. George.

1926 – Establishment of first state nursing council
In Madras (now Chennai, Tamil Nadu)

1929 – Establishment of SNA (Student Nurses Association)

1946
First degree course started in India- B.Sc Nursing in

  • RAK (Rajkumari Amrit Kaur) college of Nursing, New Delhi.
  • CMC ( The Christian Medical College), Vellore, Tamil Nadu.
    • Also in 1946 UNICEF (United Nation International Child Emergency Found) was established

1947
INC (Indian Nursing Council) was established
On 31st December, 1947

WHO (World Health Organisation) was established on 7th April, 1948
Also, 7th April is celebrated as World health day globally.

1953
ICN codes started, Revised in 2012.

1959
First Post graduate programme was started in India- M.Sc Nursing in RAK (Rajkumari Amrit kaur) college of Nursing, New Delhi.

1962
Post basic B.sc Nursing programme was started for the first time in University of Trivandrum, India.

1976
MoHFW (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare) established.
Current President of MoHFW – Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya

1980
M.Phill Nursing programme was started in RAK college of Nursing, New Delhi.

1992
Ph.D Nursing programme was started in India.
